This exquisite, limited edition of poetry and etchings is by two extraordinary Tasmanian creatives – visual artist, Jennifer Marshall, and writer and poet, Janet Upcher. Their book Shadowed highlights the four elements and views Nature as a timeless, indomitable force, more potent than any mere human power.
To mark the 10th anniversary of their collaboration, Tasmanian Gourmet Online is making a small number of remaining copies available.
In 2014, they created their first Artist’s Book, Quaternity, with a focus, through etchings and words, on the four classical elements. Their second book, Turbulence was published in 2017. Both artists books containing Janet’s handwritten poetry and Jennifer’s original etchings were purchased by the National Library of Australia.
In 2018 they published Shadowed which combines the two separate books as one edition, designed by Linda Warner.
This book, in two parts, combines Quaternity with Turbulence, suggesting that, due to climate change and the human tendency to torch trees, poison the air, pollute the waterways and dig up the earth, the elements are in turmoil. The title, Shadowed, signifies that we ignore Nature at our peril: our present is shadowed by the future unless we take steps to redress natural balance and address dangers of global warming and destructive human impact upon the environment.
Shadowed is a limited edition and only 125 copies were published. Tasmanian Gourmet Online is fortunate to have access to a handful of copies. The third edition and final artist book in the series Turning will be released early in the new year.
